Before You Contact Us
You might find your answer here. These are the questions we receive most often:
Is this calculator accurate?
Our calculators use standard HVAC industry formulas based on the SEER efficiency metric established by the U.S. Department of Energy. The results are estimates based on the values you enter. Actual energy consumption depends on many factors including installation quality, duct condition, home insulation, thermostat settings, and local weather patterns. For a detailed explanation of our methodology, see our About page methodology.
Can I use this calculator on my website?
Linking to SEER Calculator from your website is welcome and appreciated. If you'd like to embed our calculator directly into your site, please contact us first to discuss options and obtain permission. Unauthorized embedding or copying of our calculator code is not permitted.
I found a bug
Thank you for taking the time to report it! To help us fix the issue quickly, please include:
- What browser you're using (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.) and the version if you know it
- What device you're on (desktop, phone, tablet) and the operating system
- Steps to reproduce the problem (what inputs you entered, what buttons you clicked)
- What you expected to happen versus what actually happened
- Screenshots if applicable
The more detail you provide, the faster we can identify and fix the issue.
I have a feature request
We welcome suggestions for new features, additional calculator tabs, or improvements to existing functionality. While we can't implement every suggestion, we do track all requests and prioritize based on how many people would benefit and technical feasibility. Don't hesitate to share your ideas.
Where do you get your data?
Our calculator uses data and standards from authoritative industry sources. Climate zone cooling hours are based on U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regional data. The default electricity rate reflects the national average published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Efficiency testing and rating standards come from AHRI Standard 210/240. For a complete breakdown, see our About page.
Can I use this calculator for commercial buildings?
SEER Calculator is designed for residential air conditioning systems. Commercial buildings typically use different efficiency metrics (such as IEER or kW/ton), different sizing methodologies, and have significantly more complex cooling load calculations. For commercial HVAC analysis, we recommend consulting with a commercial HVAC engineer or using tools specifically designed for commercial applications.
How often is the calculator updated?
We regularly update the calculator to reflect the latest DOE efficiency standards, current national average electricity rates from the EIA, and any changes to federal minimum SEER requirements. Our educational guides are also updated as new regulations or industry standards take effect.
